Taking tickets and doing GOOD at Capitol City Theater

PROUD “NOMINATE A  GOODIE ” PARTNER

When you value something, you take care of it. I value the Capitol City Theater, so I put in a few hours last night volunteering. It’s Salem’s local improv theater that provides culture, education and laughs to our city.

Instructions were simple, dress casual and arrive at 6:30. Our family has been to the theater maybe five times and my teen boys take their improv classes. The theater to me brings more than “comedy.” It’s an affordable night out, builds character for my boys, and is a business that believes in community – and giving back.

Starting whodidgoodtoday.com hasn’t come without its questions and ideas to get around. Chip Conrad, owner of Capitol City Theater, is one business owner who has made ways for us to get involved. The Capitol City Theater Couch Race was our first public event – such big exposure for a small entry fee. But beyond racing a blue spray painted couch down the hill, Chip has had lunch with me and has taken time to understand the mission.

Business owners who take time out to help each other give value to our community. So giving a few nights to help keep a GOOD thing run a tad bit smoother, why not?

I got the hot shot position of being door girl. “Hi, welcome to Capitol City Theater” was my line. At first it looked like a slow night, only four reservations, but by show time, the room was filled with a bachelorette party, couples coming in off the street for the first time, and friends of actors wanting to support the effort. The evening was busy, a little food delivery from La Perla, vacuum a floor, take a few tickets and watch a  little bit of the show.

But after the evening ended, I felt I had been involved in something important. Community – something I respected and valued. That was worth triple the free ticket I received! As I walked to the GOODIE car, I said to myself doing GOOD feels GOOD. Now that isn’t a bad way to spend a Friday night.
