Five years ago, doctors told Mike Shelah that his then 3-year-old son was autistic. That day he added “advocate” to his job list.

“Autism is becoming more prevalent, not less, and there haven’t been a whole lot of breakthroughs,” Shelah said.

To help bring awareness to the disorder, Shelah served on the Tournament Committee for the Pathfinders for Autism Golf Tournament and Awards Dinner. The 12th annual event held at Hillendale Country Club brought golfers and Baltimore businesses together to raise funds for Pathfinders for Autism, an organization that provides information and community support to families with autistic children.

Phil and Patty Lane can’t turn a blind eye on a cat with one.The Lanes open their hearts and their home to cats that have gone feral, getting them fixed and helping them to find a forever home.
“People here in Marion know that we are feeding them and providing cat houses, so we get called a lot,” Patty said. “Recently, we rescued one from this freezing cold and had it here for about three days. We took him in to get fixed, shots and a chip, but he tested positive for feline HIV. They had to put him down because he couldn’t be around other cats. I was very emotional about it for days as he was so loving, so friendly and healthy looking.

Capitol Theater steps up for Scouts

Corey Benson, a Farmers Insurance Agent and Boy Scout Troop 50 volunteer, was in a bit of pickle. The troop had planned a game night for the boys and the planned venue fell through on short notice.
“Capitol City Theater came in like a super hero and offered their location and made these boys beyond happy,” Corey said.
“Every month is our troop camp–out, but in December, it is cold and wet and the boys spend quite a bit of time selling Christmas Trees for fundraising at the lot,” he explained. “So we do a game night indoors as a camp–out.”
